Road Safety Action International Takes Part in Africa Regional Road Safety Seminar 2024
Some of our colleagues are currently in Nairobi, Kenya, attending the highly anticipated Africa Regional Road Safety Seminar 2024. This event is organized by the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). The seminar is set to be a pivotal moment for road safety advocates, policymakers, and organizations committed to reducing road traffic fatalities and injuries.
The Africa Regional Road Safety Seminar 2024 is a power-packed event, centered on the implementation of the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030. The goal of this seminar aligns with Road Safety Action International’s core mission: to contribute to halving the number of road traffic deaths and injuries worldwide by 2030.
Why We’re Here: Strengthening Our Commitment to Road Safety
At Road Safety Action International, our participation in this critical event is driven by our deep commitment to understanding road safety challenges across the African continent. By engaging with major stakeholders from both the public and private sectors, we aim to further our role as a leading voice in global road safety advocacy. Africa, unfortunately, bears a disproportionate share of global road traffic fatalities, and we see this seminar as an opportunity to contribute tangible solutions to save lives.
With over 1.3 million people losing their lives on the world’s roads every year, and millions more suffering severe injuries, this is not just an African issue but a global crisis. However, Africa faces unique challenges, including high fatality rates, underdeveloped road infrastructure, and limited enforcement of road safety regulations. For us, understanding these regional nuances is key to implementing successful, evidence-based interventions that meet the goals of the Decade of Action.
Key Collaborators: GRSP, UNECA, and iRAP
The event is hosted in collaboration with the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS), the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA),
and the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP). This powerful coalition of organizations reflects the global momentum behind road safety as a critical health and development issue. The seminar brings together key government ministries,
national road safety agencies, development banks, road policing agencies, research institutions, and private sector organizations, all committed to driving measurable progress.
The joint effort of these influential partners signals that Africa is at the center of a growing movement to improve road safety conditions. We at Road Safety Action International are thrilled to be part of this initiative.
A Comprehensive Agenda Focused on Action
The seminar spans two full days, featuring an agenda packed with discussions and presentations on leading topics in current road safety conversations. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of effective, evidence-based road safety interventions that are designed to address the most pressing challenges, such as:
The seminar also emphasizes capacity building and the importance of using data-driven approachesto improve road safety outcomes. By the end of the two days, participants will walk away with a comprehensive toolkit of strategies and knowledge to apply within their respective countries and organizations.
Road Safety Action International: Our Role and Next Steps
For us at Road Safety Action International, the seminar is more than just an event; it’s a stepping stone toward achieving long-lasting change in road safety across Africa. Our role at this
seminar is to engage meaningfully with a diverse body of stakeholders and experts, from policymakers to civil society leaders, to ensure that road safety remains a top priority for African governments.
This event offers a platform for sharing insights, building alliances, and refining our strategies for reducing road traffic fatalities and injuries. By being part of the Africa Regional Road Safety
Seminar, we are reaffirming our commitment to Vision Zero—the ultimate goal of eliminating road deaths and serious injuries.
Looking Ahead: The Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030
As we look toward the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030, we are reminded that our work is far from over. The Global Plan calls for concerted action to prevent at least 50% of road
traffic deaths and injuries by 2030, and Road Safety Action International is fully aligned with this target. Our presence at the Africa Regional Road Safety Seminar underscores our dedication to this goal.
We will continue to advocate for stronger road safety policies, better infrastructure, and more robust enforcement of traffic laws—not only in Africa but across the globe. By building on the partnerships
and knowledge gained through this seminar, we aim to support evidence-based interventions that will have a real and lasting impact on road safety.
Stay tuned for updates from Nairobi as we share insights and developments from this key seminar. Together, we can make roads safer for everyone, everywhere.
